The Short Answer

NUI offers one-to-one check test refresher training for registered ADIs. Training focuses on demonstrating the 16 core and 5 non-core competencies naturally during a real lesson. Available for both ADIs with upcoming check tests and those who have failed and need to pass their re-test.

NUI Check Test Preparation

No contracts. One-to-one in-car refresher training for existing ADIs facing check tests. We'll beat any training quote by 15%.

NUI provides one-to-one in-car refresher training specifically designed for registered ADIs who have received an RSA check test notification or who have previously failed and need re-test preparation. The competency standard is the same as the Stage 3 Teaching Ability Test, but the setting is different: you are assessed during a normal lesson with a real student.

The focus of NUI training is on demonstrating your competencies naturally rather than performing artificially for the examiner. Over-planning and artificial performance are among the most common reasons ADIs fail. NUI helps you identify gaps in your practice and build confidence in your natural teaching approach.

Training is available for ADIs with upcoming check tests who want a refresher, and for ADIs who have failed and need targeted re-test preparation. NUI operates in Dublin, Galway, and Cork. Contact NUI for a free consultation before booking to assess your readiness and plan your training.

What the Check Test Assesses

The RSA examiner observes your normal lesson and assesses 16 core competencies plus a minimum of 5 non-core competencies.

The check test uses the same competency standard as Stage 3. The examiner sits in the rear seat and observes how you deliver a real lesson to your student. You must demonstrate all 16 core competencies and at least 5 non-core competencies during the observed lesson. For a full explanation of what the check test involves, see our dedicated information page.

Logistics You Need to Know

  • Arrival: You must arrive on time with a suitable car and a student who holds a valid learner permit.
  • Late arrival: If you are late, the check test will be rescheduled within 10 days.
  • Student no-show: If your student does not attend, the examiner substitutes as the student and provides a scenario for you to work with.
  • Lesson delivery: You must deliver the pre-planned lesson for that student. The examiner will check your logbook to confirm the lesson was planned in advance.
  • Vehicle requirements: Your car must be clean and have rear seating available for up to 2 RSA staff.

Common Reasons ADIs Fail

Understanding why ADIs fail helps you avoid the same pitfalls. NUI training targets each of these areas directly.

Over-Planning the Lesson

Trying to show everything at once rather than delivering a natural, student-focused lesson. The examiner wants to see your normal teaching practice, not a performance. Avoid the common instructor mistakes that stem from over-preparation.

Conducting the Lesson Differently Than Normal

Changing your teaching style because you are being observed. The examiner can tell when the lesson feels rehearsed or artificial. Maintaining your natural approach is essential.

Poor Understanding of What to Demonstrate

Not knowing which competencies the examiner is looking for, or misunderstanding what each competency requires. Studying the RSA guide and report form addresses this gap.

Not Meeting Stage 3 Standard

The check test uses the same competency standard as Stage 3. If your teaching has drifted below that standard over time, training with NUI helps you get back to the required level. See our guide on instructor excellence.

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about check test preparation and NUI training.

The most common reasons are over-planning (trying to demonstrate everything at once), conducting the lesson artificially instead of naturally, poor understanding of which competencies are being assessed, and not meeting the Stage 3 standard. NUI training addresses all of these by working with you in-car to identify and correct specific weaknesses in your teaching practice.

Yes. NUI specialises in preparing ADIs for re-tests. Your re-test is typically scheduled 6-8 weeks after a failure, so time is limited. Start training as soon as possible after receiving your result. NUI will review your feedback, identify the specific areas that need improvement, and work with you in-car until you are confident and ready.

The examiner substitutes as the student and provides a scenario for you to work with. This is why demonstrating natural instruction is critical regardless of who your student is. NUI training prepares you to teach naturally in any situation, whether with your regular student or with an examiner role-playing as a learner.

The competency standard is the same. The key difference is that during a check test you are assessed during a normal lesson with a real student, not a simulated scenario with an examiner playing the learner. The examiner observes how you naturally instruct in your everyday teaching environment. For more on the ADI qualification process including Stage 3, see our becoming an ADI guide.

As soon as you receive your RSA notification. The RSA provides at least 28 days notice before a check test. Contact NUI immediately for a free consultation to assess your readiness and plan your training. The sooner you start, the more time you have to address any gaps and build confidence in your natural teaching approach.
