The Short Answer

This page covers essential resources for existing registered ADIs: check test preparation guides, CPD materials, RSA official documents, and online tools like MyEDT. All RSA guides listed here are free to download. For ADI candidates seeking study materials, see the aspiring instructors resources page instead.

Essential Resources Overview

Supporting ongoing professional excellence for registered ADIs across Ireland.

This page brings together the key resources every registered ADI should have in their professional toolkit. Whether you are preparing for an upcoming check test, maintaining your continuing professional development, or looking to refine your teaching methodology, the materials listed here will help you maintain and exceed the standard expected by the RSA.

All RSA publications listed below are available as free downloads. Keeping these resources current and reviewing them regularly is part of maintaining the professional standard that the RSA assesses during check tests. Use the checklist below to track which resources you have in place.

RSA Official Guides

Free publications from the RSA that every registered ADI should download and review regularly.

RSA Guide to the Check Test

The essential reference document for understanding exactly how the RSA assesses your teaching during a check test. This guide outlines the assessment criteria, the 16 core competencies, and the standard expected. Every registered ADI should read this guide at least once a year, and always before a scheduled check test. Understanding the assessment criteria is the foundation of good preparation.

Stage 3 Test Report Form

The report form used by RSA examiners during both Stage 3 and check test assessments. It shows the exact competencies being marked and how your performance is graded. Reviewing this form helps you understand what the examiner is looking for in each area. The check test uses the same competency standard as Stage 3, so this form applies directly to your ongoing assessments.

Teaching Methodology

The framework that underpins how the RSA expects ADIs to approach driver education.

The GDE Matrix (Goals for Driver Education) is the framework the RSA uses to structure driver education in Ireland. It defines 4 levels of driver behaviour and 3 dimensions of learning at each level. Understanding this framework helps you structure your lessons and demonstrate the teaching approach the RSA expects during check tests.

The 4 GDE levels cover everything from basic vehicle handling at the lowest level through to self-awareness and life goals at the highest. The RSA expects ADIs to address all levels, not just the mechanical skills of driving. The GDE Matrix is available on RSA.ie and is referenced in RSA training documentation.

For a deeper look at how to apply coaching principles in your lessons, see our guide on taking a coaching approach to driver education.

Online Tools

Digital platforms registered ADIs use in their daily professional practice.

MyEDT Portal

The RSA MyEDT (My Essential Driver Training) portal is the online system all registered ADIs use to log and track EDT lesson delivery. Both the instructor and the student record progress through the 12 EDT lessons on the portal. It is essential for all ADIs delivering EDT lessons and the RSA uses it to monitor compliance. Access the portal and find support documentation on the RSA website.
